💬 Your First Conversation

By the end of this lesson, you'll have had a real back-and-forth conversation with AI. It's easier than texting.

📱 Lesson 1: Opening ChatGPT

ChatGPT is the most popular AI tool in the world - and it's completely free to use. Here's all you need to do to get started:

  1. 1

Go to chat.openai.com on your phone or computer. You can also search "ChatGPT" in Google.

  2. 2

Tap "Sign up" - it's free. You don't need a credit card.

  3. 3

Use your Google account or email to sign up. Takes about 60 seconds.

  4. 4

You'll see a big text box at the bottom of the screen. That's where you type your questions.

"You'll see a text box. That's where the magic happens."

💻

What you'll see: A clean white (or dark) page with a text box that says
"Message ChatGPT" - just click it and start typing.

🍗 Lesson 2: Your First Question

Forget everything you’ve heard about AI being complicated. Your first question is going to be something you might actually use tonight.

Type this into ChatGPT — copy it exactly:

What’s a good recipe for dinner tonight with chicken and rice? 👆 Type this (or paste it) into ChatGPT and press Enter
  1. 1

Hit Enter (or tap the arrow button on your phone)

  2. 2

    Wait about 5 seconds

  3. 3

    Read what comes back

🎉 Congratulations. You just used AI.
Seriously — that’s it. You talked to AI, and it helped you. That’s the whole thing.

Open ChatGPT. Type: “What’s a good dinner with chicken and rice?” Hit enter. Done.

You just used AI. Next lesson.

Navigate to chat.openai.com. In the message input field, type a natural language query such as:

“What’s a good recipe for dinner tonight with chicken and rice?”

Press Enter or click the send arrow. The model will generate a response based on its training data. Note: the response is generated, not retrieved from a database — so it may vary each time. Review the output critically before following any recipe.

Let’s do this together, nice and easy. No rush. 💙

  1. 1

On your phone or computer, open your web browser (Safari, Chrome, whatever you normally use for internet)

  2. 2

In the address bar at the top, type: chat.openai.com and hit Go

  3. 3

You’ll see a page with a text box at the bottom. That’s where you type.

  4. 4

Type these exact words: “What’s a good recipe for dinner tonight with chicken and rice?”

  5. 5

Tap the little arrow button (or press Enter)

  6. 6

Wait about 5 seconds. Watch the words appear.

That’s it! You just talked to AI! 🎉 See? Not scary at all. Read what it wrote — it actually gave you a real recipe. If you want to change something, just type “make it spicier” or “I don’t like cilantro” and it adjusts.

You’re doing amazing. Seriously.

Here’s something fun to try — ask AI something that helps someone you care about! 📛

Open ChatGPT (chat.openai.com) and type:

“My friend is feeling down. Write me a sweet, encouraging text message I can send them.”

Or try:

“Help me plan a surprise birthday dinner for my mom who loves Italian food. Budget is $50.”

Or:

“My grandchild asked me what a black hole is. Help me explain it in a fun way for a 7-year-old.”

See? AI helps you show up better for the people you love. That’s the real superpower. 📛

🔄 Lesson 3: The Follow-Up

Here's where AI gets really powerful. You don't have to start over every time - you can keep the conversation going.

After ChatGPT gives you that chicken and rice recipe, try typing one of these:

Make it spicier
I don't have cilantro - what can I substitute?
Can you make the instructions simpler?

🧠 AI remembers your whole conversation. You can go back and forth, ask follow-ups, change your mind, and refine the answer - just like texting a knowledgeable friend.

This is called a "conversation thread." Each time you type a follow-up, AI uses everything said before to give you a better, more specific answer. That's the real power.

✨ Lesson 4: The Magic Phrase

Sometimes AI gives you an answer that's too long, too complicated, or full of words you don't recognize. That's not your problem - it's just AI forgetting who it's talking to.

Here's the phrase that fixes it every single time:

Copy this. Save it. Use it forever: "Explain this like I'm talking to my neighbor over the fence." Type this after any answer that confuses you

Why does it work? Because AI is remarkably good at adjusting its language when you tell it who you are. "Neighbor over the fence" tells it: casual, friendly, no jargon, no assumptions.

🌟 Works every time. AI will strip away the complicated language and explain it like a real person would - the kind of explanation you'd actually remember.

Other versions of this magic phrase:

Explain this like I'm 60 years old and not tech-savvy
Give me the short version - just the key points
Use simple words and give me an example

🚀 Lesson 5: Five More Things to Try Right Now

Now that you know how to have a conversation, let's put AI to real use. These are things people actually do every day.

1
Write me a thank-you note for my neighbor who watched my dog

Personal, warm, ready to send. AI writes it in seconds.

2
What does this word mean: [type any word you don't know]

Instant definitions, in plain English, with examples.

3
Help me plan a birthday party for a 10-year-old on a $200 budget

AI loves planning. Give it a budget and a goal - it goes to work.

4
Write a text to cancel plans without being rude

AI handles awkward social situations better than most people do.

5
What should I do if my car makes a grinding noise when I brake?

AI as your first stop before calling a mechanic. Could save you money.

✅ Try It Yourself - Check Off Each One!

Open ChatGPT, try each prompt, then come back and check it off. When all 5 are done, you get a surprise. 🎉

Asked ChatGPT for a dinner recipe with chicken and rice
Did a follow-up ("make it spicier" or similar)
Used the magic phrase: "Explain this like my neighbor over the fence"
Tried one of the 5 prompts (thank-you note, party planning, etc.)
Started a brand-new conversation about anything you're curious about
🎊

You Did It! You're Officially Not a Beginner Anymore!

You just had 5 conversations with AI. You asked questions, got helpful answers, and made AI work for you - on your terms, in your own words.

That's not nothing. A lot of people read about AI for months and never actually try it. You tried it. And now you know: it's not scary. It's just useful.
